I had a very good first experience at the Wichita Visual Institute on Maize Ct in Wichita Kansas. The staff was very courteous and professional and worked me right through all the testing even though they were very busy. Kaden was easy to follow with directions for each testing site. My eyes and yours if you use wichita vision institute will be very well taken care of by top of their field staff members. This I write after my first cataract surgery. The experience of cataract surgery was as smooth and comfortable as I was told by others that had it before me, I describe it as a quick light show in the eye having the cataract removed. There are no other senses being used since you feel nothing, see nothing other than some blobby patches of light. I suspect that the procedure is done so well due to Dr Patel being the one performing the surgery with her unmatched skills. I was referred to Dr. Patel by my former ophthalmologist three years ago when he moved his practice from Wichita. At the time he told me he would trust Dr. Patel with his eyes. I am so grateful for his recommendation and referral. Dr. Patel has been treating me for glaucoma and cataracts and I’ve experienced dramatic improvement in my visual health. She takes a very proactive approach treating my glaucoma. Through the use of laser surgery and iStent implants, my eye pressure has been substantially reduced to the point where I no longer need some of my prescription eye drops. I appreciate Dr. Patelaggressively treating my disease and thus saving my vision.Recently, I had laser cataract surgery and am absolutely thrilled with the results. After wearing glasses for 30 years, I no longer need them and I now have 20/20 vision. I didn’t think that was possible. Dr. Patel told me I would love the outcome and she was right!In addition to being a top-notch physician and surgeon, Dr. Patel passionately cares about her patients. She never rushes through an appointment, answers every question in terms that patients can understand and explains every procedure she will be doing as well an any alternatives. I’ve never left her office feeling that she didn’t spend enough time with me.Dr. Patel also has an excellent staff. Everyone in the office is professional, friendly and courteous. I had been to 3 opthamologists in 3 years for what started as iritis and uveitis and all it was doing was getting worse. I had holes in my cornea, the pressure was out of control and it was so dry that my eyelids were actually tearing it more. After the first visit to Dr. Patel I noticed a change for the better. After a year, it was amazing how much better it was. Currently it's under control, no more holes in the cornea and it's steady enough that I could even get new glasses. I have dry eye which was made much worse after cataract surgery by another doctor; so bad I quickly developed chronic cornea erosion and poor vision in my right eye. Fortunately, Dr. Patel allowed me to come in on short notice for an immediate evaluation and assistance. She and her staff are extremely friendly, professional and knowledgeable. I've also never been to an eye doctor who was more thorough in her/his testing, as well having cutting edge equipment and treatments specific for my condition. Dr Patel is my Hero doctor. She saved my life!I woke up one morning with a pain in my right temple and my right eye felt scratched as though the cornea was damaged. The pain was constant and becoming more intense so I went to the ER and had a C-T scan and a blood test for Large Cell Arteritis which was negative. I went to Dr Patel and she saw that my right eye and eyelid were atrophying and sent me straight to the ER at Wesley. Wrote everything down in a pretty easy way to understand. Surgery day came and I became pretty nervous but Dr Patel calmed my nerves and actually had me laughing most of the time during the procedure. (You know except when I was supposed to be still ) She called me the same night to see how I was doing and if I had any questions. And she saw me as often as I needed in the first year. The staff is nice, but they overbook appointments. I've had 2 consultation appointments so far, and have had to wait over 50 minutes before being called both times. Dr. Patel took the time to apologize, and explain the reasons for the delay. That was greatly appreciated. Update 12/28: Scheduling has improved greatly. Was called in with less than a 5 minute wait today. Staff is very nice as usual. Update 1/4/18 (Day of Procedure): I was called after less than 5 minutes of waiting. The staff and Dr. Patel are amazing! I was nervous and excited about the procedure. Before going back, the front desk staff made sure I had a ride home, and wrote down my friend's contact info. Dr. Patel took time to answer my last minute questions and also helped calm my nerves before the procedure. Her staff walked me through all my medications, their uses, and dosages. I never felt rushed or made to feel like I asked dumb questions. After the procedure, the staff contacted my friend for me, and made sure I was comfortable while waiting for her arrival. Dr. Patel personally called to check on me at 7PM after the procedure.I am very impressed by their high level of care, attention to detail, and appreciative of all their help. Update 1/5/18 (Follow-up): Scheduling has improved drastically. Once again, I waited less than 5 minutes before being called in. I have been a patient of Dr. Rena Patel for the past two years. Although I have had to wait to get back and see the doctor , I have always had her undivided attention when she is in the exam room. Dr. Patel is a physician whose sincere goal is to improve the quality of life for her patients. When I first became a patient under Dr. Patel’s care, I was diagnosed with cataracts in both of my eyes; dry eye syndrome; and astigmatism. Previous records from my Lasik surgery, which occurred 17 years ago, were no longer available. The Lasik surgery documentation was important in determining the exact corrections that now needed to be made to properly correct my astigmatism. Dr. Patel wisely recommended I postpone the cataract removal and astigmatism correction procedure, until she received newly developed diagnostic equipment. This newly developed technology would provide her with the most accurate metrics possible. New specialized lens implants were also becoming available, which would correct my astigmatism. Dr. Patel explained my chances for a successful outcome would be significantly increased if I would be patient and wait a little longer. Dr. Patel is truly a physician with high integrity and would never perform surgery until she knew it was the right time. She truly cares about providing her patients with the best care she can. Dr. Patel successfully treated my dry eye symptoms with a regiment of eye drops, cleansing techniques and vitamins, which prevented me from requiring more extensive - and more expensive treatment. Prior to the surgery on my right eye, she provided me with sample eye drops from her office and coupons for the eye drops I would need to purchase after my surgery. She did all she could to reduce my expenses. During preparations for right eye surgery, Dr. Patel spent quality time with me explaining the results of my pre-surgery testing and asking questions to determine my vision goals. One of my desires was to once again see the front sight on a pistol. I thoroughly enjoyed going to the firing range, but due to the cataract in my right eye I could no longer see the sights, on my pistol. Although the cataract in my left eye was not as bad yet – I was also experiencing difficulty seeing and firing left handed. Using a blue gun (authentic plastic replica of a Sig P229 pistol), Dr. Patel took additional measurements which she used in determining the correct lens to implant, during my surgery. My right eye surgery took place on November 1, 2017. Two days after the surgery, I happened to glance at my mobile phone and for the first time in 10 years or more, I could read the information on the screen without glasses. I pulled the Sig out of its case and – wow! – The sight picture was there clear as a bell. So the right eye cataract is gone along with the rainbow halos around cars at night and the astigmatism has been corrected better than I dreamed possible. Quality of life restored! The process included the latest diagnostic equipment; the newest technology in an intraocular lens implant; and the use of a laser surgery technique performed by Dr. Patel. My daughter has been coming to this office for quite some time. The staff and Dr patel always make her feel comfortable. My daughter is not always the best compliant patient at the age of 13 but Dr Patel is very good with her. My daughter has had several chilazions cut and injected on her eyelids and does well with it.
